Apple ships the iPhone Duo on October 23. Here is what is known, with sources, and I’ll keep this first post updated as Apple says more.
What Apple has said. Pencil support is “coming later this year.” Apple’s page names one model, the Apple Pencil (USB-C), and doesn’t say which display it works on. It is not there at launch. Source: the FAQ on Apple’s iPhone Duo page.
Which Pencil. Apple’s page names only the Apple Pencil (USB-C). If you own a Pencil Pro or a Pencil 2, check before you count on it. Engadget says only the USB-C model is compatible, and guesses the reason is that the iPhone lacks the magnets to attach and charge a Pencil. Apple has not explained.
What is only reported. Apple has not confirmed a version or a month, and these are guesses. Engadget expects the update with iOS 27.2 around November. iDropNews thinks it may wait for iOS 27.3 in December, and relays Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman saying it will be “fairly late in 2026.” BGR calls the date “undetermined.”
What Penlog is doing. Version 1.3.0 installs on the Duo as an iPhone app (I’ve checked that on Apple’s simulator, and I’ll check real hardware as soon as I can). Writing on a Duo will come in a later release, once Apple releases Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo.
- Are you getting a Duo? Is Pencil support part of why?
- Do you own an Apple Pencil (USB-C), or a Pencil Pro or Pencil 2?
- If you could write on a Duo, what would you want a handwritten journal to do there?
